Ask the right questions.
It takes keen observation of user behavior to uncover real insights which are based on what users need rather than what they say they want. This takes time and is hard to justify when talking about budgets and deadlines. But, without this solid base, there will be a guaranteed problem when the software is delivered and users don’t want the features.
